When I was a kid, our family had a full set of World Book Encyclopedias — those thick, colorful volumes that answered every question before Google existed. But my favorite wasn’t one of the main books. It was the children’s book about holidays around the world.
I absolutely loved that book. 🌍 It explained how different cultures celebrated — not just what they did, but why. Reading it helped me understand the roots behind each holiday and why they were important to the people who celebrated them.
One of the holidays that stood out to me was All Saints’ Day. I’d see it mentioned in stories or on calendars, but until I read about it in my encyclopedia, I didn’t really understand what it meant.
🕊 What Is All Saints’ Day?
All Saints’ Day is a Christian holiday celebrated every year on November 1st. It’s a day to honor all the saints — known and unknown — who have lived faithful lives.
For many, it’s a time to remember loved ones who’ve passed and reflect on the good they brought into the world.
Different cultures mark it in unique ways:

In some Catholic and Protestant traditions, people attend church services or visit cemeteries to leave flowers and light candles.

In parts of Europe and Latin America, families celebrate with food and prayer, blending remembrance with gratitude.

Here in Texas, it often overlaps with Día de los Muertos, a beautiful way to honor loved ones with color, music, and joy.
💬 A Thought for Today
It’s easy to celebrate holidays for the fun of them — and I’m all for a good party! But every once in a while, I think we’d all be better off if we took a moment to remember why we celebrate.
Not every day calls for green beer or fireworks. Some days, like All Saints’ Day, are meant to remind us where we come from, who we’ve loved, and what really matters.
So wherever you are today, take a quiet moment to remember someone who made a difference in your life — and carry a little of their goodness forward.
