Hot Dogs, Fireworks, and Freedom Worth Celebrating
Every July 4th, I’m reminded just how lucky we are to live in a country that gives us the freedom to chase our dreams — and how that freedom isn't just a concept, it’s something my family has lived.
Our celebration usually includes good food, something festive to wear, and of course, keeping a close eye on the grill. Because without fail, my dog manages to swipe at least one hot dog off someone’s plate when no one’s looking. And later, once the fireworks start, you’ll find her tucked under the bed — not from guilt over the hot dog, mind you, but because those booms are nope-worthy in her book.
But behind the laughs and the cookouts, this day always makes me reflect a little deeper.
My Family’s American Dream
My dad came to the United States through Ellis Island after living through World War II in Belgium. His family endured unimaginable hardships — including the heartbreaking loss of his brother Joseph, who died while serving in the French Resistance. Like so many immigrants, they arrived in America with hope, resilience, and not much else.
My dad learned English, worked hard, and went on to proudly serve in the U.S. Army, earning several awards along the way. He was one of the most patriotic people I’ve ever known — because he knew what it meant to live without freedom… and what it meant to finally find it.
That legacy — of grit, sacrifice, and gratitude — runs deep in my heart. It’s why the American Dream isn’t just a phrase to me. It’s family. It’s freedom. It’s real.
🏡 A Home with a Story
Part of that dream for so many families — including mine — is owning a home. A place that’s yours. A front door you open after a long day. A yard where kids (and dogs) can run wild. A porch for watching sunsets or chatting with neighbors. Whether it’s your first place or your forever one, a home represents stability, possibility, and pride.
And here in America, that dream is still alive. We’re one of the few countries where someone can start with very little and still build a life that’s full of purpose and joy. That’s something to celebrate — not just once a year, but every day.
🎇 Let Freedom Ring (and Maybe Grab the Dog Some Earplugs)
So this July 4th, as you're flipping burgers, watching fireworks, or trying to keep your pup from stress-shedding under the furniture, take a moment to appreciate what we’ve been given — and what so many have sacrificed to protect.
The American Dream isn’t perfect. But it’s powerful. And for me, it’s personal.
Here’s to freedom, to opportunity, and to finding a home with a story.
Happy Independence Day, friends!
With gratitude and a few missing hot dogs,
—Jacque
