Some Foodie Fridays just hit differently—and this one brings back a little memory, a little music, and a whole lot of nostalgia.

When I realized today is National Coke Day, I immediately knew I had to celebrate it. Because let’s be honest… Coca-Cola isn’t just a drink. It’s part of memories, summers, diners, backyard BBQs, and those “sit on the porch a little longer” kind of moments.

And somehow, it also made me think of one of my favorite throwback songs—“I Was Country When Country Wasn’t Cool” by Barbara Mandrell.

There’s a line in it that always makes me smile:

“I remember when no one was lookin’, I was puttin’ peanuts in my Coke.”

And I’ll admit it—I’ve always wondered how many people actually do that. (Spoiler: it’s pretty good. Salty, sweet, oddly addictive… worth trying at least once.)

National Coke Day is the perfect excuse to play around with all the nostalgic (and slightly indulgent) ways people enjoy it:

🍦 1. Classic Coke Float

Simple, timeless, and impossible to mess up:

  • Vanilla ice cream
  • Ice cold Coca-Cola

That’s it. That’s the recipe. And somehow, it still feels like a celebration every time.

🥜 2. The “Peanuts in Your Coke” Trick

Yes—it’s a thing. And yes, it actually works.

  • Pour Coca-Cola over salted peanuts (or drop them right into the bottle if you’re feeling bold)

You get that sweet + salty combo that people either grow up loving or are completely surprised by.

🍰 3. Coke Cake (Yes, It Exists)

A Southern classic:

  • Chocolate cake with Coca-Cola baked right into the batter
  • Often topped with warm chocolate frosting poured over the top

Rich, nostalgic, and very “bring this to a potluck and leave with an empty pan.”
