Back in the mid-90s—around 1996—my husband and I decided we wanted a quick getaway that wasn’t too far from home.
We didn’t overthink it… we just got in the car and went exploring.
And that’s how we stumbled into the little town of Fredericksburg… and its equally charming cousin up the road, Luckenbach.
🛍️ A Town Full of Charm
From the moment we arrived, we knew we had found something special.
There were:
- Candle shops
- Little boutiques
- Amazing German food (so good!)
And just an overall charm that made you want to slow down and stay awhile.
We also visited the National Museum of the Pacific War (also known as the Admiral Nimitz Museum), which was such an unexpected and interesting stop.
🍂 And Then… Oktoberfest
As luck would have it, we showed up during Oktoberfest.
Let me just say—we were VERY glad we found a room!
The energy, the music, the people… it was one of those trips you don’t forget.
🍷 Texas Wine Country? Yes, Really.
And here’s something a lot of people don’t realize…
Fredericksburg is right in the middle of Texas wine country.
Yes—wineries in Texas!
Over the years, it’s grown even more, but even back then, it had that relaxed, welcoming feel that made it such a fun place to explore.
🐶 A Trip We’ll Never Forget
And then… there’s the dog story.
We had our two dogs with us—Muttles and Maxwell—and they were being so good that we decided to sneak out for breakfast.
We left the TV on for them and headed out.
When we came back…
They were howling.
Not barking—howling.
Right along with the music from a church service we had left on.
I was mortified.
But no one complained… so I guess everyone just figured our little guys wanted to praise the Lord too. 😄
🏡 Why Places Like This Matter
Trips like this remind me why people fall in love with Texas.
It’s not just the big cities—it’s the small towns, the unexpected moments, and the memories you make along the way.
Fredericksburg is one of those places that just sticks with you.
