In Texas, we’re proud of many things—our bluebonnets, barbecue, and big-hearted communities—but one of the most meaningful legacies rooted in our state is Juneteenth.
What is Juneteenth?
Juneteenth marks June 19, 1865, the day when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, with news that the Civil War had ended—and that enslaved people were now free. This was two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, and it became a powerful moment of truth, liberation, and new beginnings.
Texans began commemorating that day the following year with prayer services, family reunions, parades, and cookouts—a tradition that grew across the country over time.
A National Holiday with Deep Texas Roots
While Juneteenth celebrations have long been a cherished part of Black communities, especially in Texas, it wasn’t until June 17, 2021, that Juneteenth officially became a federal holiday. And yes, we Texans quietly nodded and said, “Well, it’s about time.”
Why It Matters Today
Juneteenth isn’t just about the past—it’s a reminder of resilience, community, and progress. It’s about honoring those who waited far too long to be recognized as free and reflecting on how we continue to build stronger, more inclusive neighborhoods today.
