Rental scams.

And unfortunately, they’re happening more often—especially online.

In fact, I had this happen with one of my own listings.

😳 A Real Story (This One Hit Close to Home)

I once had a home listed for sale when the owner got a call from someone asking about renting it.

That was the first red flag… because the home was not for rent.

Come to find out, someone had taken my listing photos and created an ad pretending to be the owner.

The ad said something like:

  • “I’m moving to Hawaii”

  • “Don’t contact the agent”

  • “Just send a deposit if you want the home”

Thankfully, the person who saw the ad thought it sounded off and reached out directly.

Because yes… it was a scam.

And honestly? That’s usually the biggest clue.

👉 If it sounds too good to be true… it probably is.

🏠 How These Scams Work

Scammers are getting smarter.

They’ll often:

  • Copy real listing photos

  • Repost them online

  • Change the contact information

  • Pretend to be the owner or agent

Sometimes they’ll even target homes that are for sale and try to pass them off as rentals.

🚩 Red Flags to Watch For

If you or someone you know is looking to rent, here are some big warning signs:

❌ “Don’t contact the agent”
❌ Asking for money before you’ve seen the home
❌ Prices that seem way below market
❌ Requests for payment through gift cards, wire transfers, or apps
❌ A sense of urgency (“Send money now or you’ll lose it”)

Scammers rely on pressure and emotion.

✔️ Always verify who you’re dealing with
✔️ Look up the property through public records
✔️ Work with a licensed real estate agent when possible
✔️ Never send money without confirming everything first
✔️ Trust your instincts—if something feels off, pause

Even something as simple as doing a quick search of the listing photos can help uncover a scam.

If your home is listed (or even vacant), it can be a target.

A few things you can do:

  • Consider adding a watermark

  • Keep an eye on vacant properties

  • Let your agent know if anything seems off
